The Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo Northern Province,

St. Charles Convent, Gumla

St. Charles Sisters were invited to Gumla district by Rev. Fr. Joseph Kezhakekkara SDB ,the then provincial of the Salesians to share the apostolate at Bamhani , Gumla District Jharkhand. Bamhani is situated about 2 kms. away from Ranchi - Gumla main Road, 90 kms away from Ranchi.
In 1995, when the Salesians found a piece of land in Bamhani the sisters of St. Charles were invited to buy a portion of the land about 3.83 acres which was registered in the name of St. Charles Society on January 10, 1996. The SCB mission at Gumla was started on March 26 - 2001. The house at Gumla is set up in a panoramic natural set up.

The two provincials Rev. Fr. Joseph SDB & Rev. Sr. Saroj SCB agreed that the sisters of St. Charles would share their mission through the following apostolate activities.

  • Administration &management of girl’s hostel.

  • Administration & management of Nursery & lower K.G.

  • A teaching post for a sister in Don Bosco primary School

  • The pioneers were Srs . Nirmala Williams the animator, Sr. Harriet Kispotta , Sr. Lucy Kujur and Sr. Cynthia Robinson. The Sisters took time to study the area, culture and customs of the people walking the dusty roads of the villages, visiting the people and getting acquainted with them was the first phase of their missionary adventure.

  • Initially the sisters were accommodated in Don Bosco Campus as the newly purchased land was only a bare ground then. The Salesians had already built their residence and the hostel for the boys. The sisters engaged themselves in teaching in the school and also in pastoral and social activities. On July 14 2002 the foundation stone was laid for the convent building and in October 20, 2003 the convent was blessed by Bishop Michael Minj.

  • St. Charles Convent Gumla continued its mission of managing the Nursery, LKG and later the U. K. G too was given to the Sisters. Today the Montessori school has ample admissions as it is the feeder school of Don Bosco School. The sisters also manage to cater to about 90 borders

  • Following the footsteps of our patron St. Charles Borromeo and our founder Fr. Adrien Bresy whose lives ebbed away like a candle, giving light to the surrounding darkness, our sisters extend their service to the people of the locality. In the evening they continue free coaching classes for the poor children and visit their houses

  • Charity to the poor is like a living flame. The presence of the sisters in this place has irrevocably changed the lives of the people and given hope for a bright future.
