Northern Province

January 12. 2003 is remembered as a red letter day in the history of the Northern region for on this day the third province of the sisters of St. Charles Borromeo in India came into existence. . The decision was taken in order to render the best of service to the northern region through better co ordination and effective collaboration in the administration of the congregation at large.


History

Sr. Christine Vaz was chosen as the first provincial of the new born province. Sr. Christine along with her councilors Sr. Sabina Kurian, Sr. Clotilda Dsouza, Sr. Elizabeth Chacko &Sr. Hariette Kispotta made their solemn promise to lead the new born province. As a symbol, a seed was planted in a pot by our new Provincial and all the councilors came forward and watered it in turn promising to carefully tend water and bring up the province.


Sr. Christine Vas

On 12.01.2003 Sr. Christine Vaz Took charge as the 1st provincial superior of the Northern Province. The house at Hatia was chosen as the provincial house and it remains the same till today. Under her able and dedicated guidance the Province grew far & vide, spreading it braches to the North East ( Mizoram) with 3 houses ( Hnahthyal, New Serchip & Aizawl) and the Muruguni Mission in Jharkhand as a jubilee gift. The province also began to branch out and grow in vocations as we had many candidates coming from Jharkhand, Orissa & Chhattisgarh. Sr. Christine led the province for a term of 6 years.

Sr. Sabina Kurain

Under the Stewardship of Sr. Sabina Kurian who took charge as provincial superior on 18.01.2009 the province grew gradually spreading its mission for the less fortunate and the poorest of the poor. The apostolic activities included living amidst the poor in extended communities, preaching, teaching and taking care of the sick in minor scale. Her team of councilors consisted of Srs. Mary Jacob, Sally Augustine, Leena Pinto, & Olivia Fernandez Sr. Sabina also led the province for a term of 6 years with a different set of councilors after 3 years. The two new ventures taken up during this period was the insertive community at Makunda and the Burigora mission at Chkradharpur in Jamshedpur diocese.

Sr. Sebasti Susai

Sr. Sebasti Susai was chosen to lead the province from January 2015. She took charge as provincial superior on 28.01.15 along with her councilors Srs. Philo Thomas, Elizabeth Chacko, Mary Fernandes, & Anita Tigga. The enthusiastic move to serve the poor and to live amidst them in extended communities and working in collaboration with the dioceses etc. are some of the new missions that are taken up by the new team. Province level celebrations for the closing of the Y.C.L was conducted in two places, in Gumla & Jhansi- happy occasions of meeting & sharing.

Sr. Marykutty Jacob

The 4 th Provincial Superior of Northern Province (2021- ). Sr. Mary Jacob is one of the early missionaries who came to Jharkhand in 1984 and did her B.Ed in Ursuline Collage of Education in Lohardaga. She completed her studies in distinction. She was appointed as head mistress of St. Charles High school Kuru in 1985 and continued till 1997. She was the administrator in Kuru 1997-2000 and moved to Hatia in 2000 May. She was appointed as H.M in St. Charles School Hatia and served two years and continued as an administrator till 2011. She has a good taste of architecture and landscaping. Buildings in Kuru Hatia and other places in Jharkhand are examples of her love towards development. She moved to Generalate as General Councillor in 2012 – 2017. She is a person of deep faith and commitment in her mission of education for the poor and management. She takes pain to enhance the knowledge and talents of everyone.
