The Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo Northern Province,

Genesis of S.C.B at New Serchhip

Our new mission in Mizoram the land of peace and progress nestled in the gentle hill folds. Mizoram is one of the fabled seven sisters of the North East, covers an overall area of 21,087sq, km. Mizoram shares its borders with three states- Assam, Tripura and Manipur. The state also has common borders with the two foreign countries, Myanmar and Bangladesh. Mizoram is divided into 8 districts. Serchhip is one of the districts where we are working. Mizoram, a small state is linguistically heterogeneous with as many as 15 languages spoken by its people. Lushai/ Mizo, was spoken by 3,65813 persons(1981swenses) among the tribes bilingual is high. Mizo speakers know English. 14 Mizo communities lice in the ecological heights characterized by hillirteranian with dense forests having low humidity, and high rainfall and having moderately warm summers and not too cold winters. Mizo ways of life mostly influenced by Christian norms which gives the Mizo’s the new sense of identity. They are known for western music. The people of Mizoram are peace loving and kind. They are very supportive and generous. 90% of the population is Christians. Catholicism came here only after 1947. The Mizo’s have their own culture and tradition. The family spirit of the Mizo’s something great to be admired. Mizo houses are made of wood, bamboos and tin sheets. Taken all in all, Mizoram is made up of swift flowing rivers, quick silver streams and still lakes and combination of these is a rarity. And it is the combination of these physical features that has given Mizoram its own charm and fascination. It’s a free society. Mizo’s enjoy freedom.

The Beginning......

And to this state we were invited by the Diocese of Aizawl by Rt. Rev. Bishop Stephen Rotluanga. Gave a whole hearted consent by saying ‘Yes’ to the will of God, our Provincial Superior Rev. Sr.Christine along with Sr.Monthi Dias, Sr. Maria Lynette Lobo, Sr.Shanthi Lobo and Sr.Lalitha Minj started their journey from Hatia on 12th Dec 2015 and reached Aizawl Bishop’s house on 15th Dec 2015 at 1:00pm. Bishop of Aizawl Rt.Rev Bishop Stephen Rotluanga warmly welcomed the sisters. After their lunch Bishop met them as a group, encouraged and blessed them to go forward courageously with same zeal and vigour. Then they resumed their journey and reached the destination i.e. Serchhip, safe at 6:30pm. Sisters sincerely appreciated and thanked Provincial Superior Rev.Sr.Christine who was a great help and support and made sure that sisters lack nothing. She encouraged, boosted their spirit and took keen interest in everything.

Educational Apostolate

Educational Apostolate was extended from Hnahthial to New Serchhip with missionary zeal and enthusiasm to dispel the darkness of ignorance through literacy. Despite challenges and multiple impediments, the sisters pioneered in reaching out to the communities who were less privileged in terms of Primary Education in English Medium. Diocese provided us a good house with most of the facilities. Fr.Francis Velliyil the Parish Priest of Serchhip Heartily welcomed the sisters. Sr. Monthi Dias and Sr. Maria Lynette Lobo the pioneers of this house lived in the rented house for two years i.e.18th Dec 2006 to 13th April 2008 and worked in the newly started school named as All Saints School. In the first year, the no. of students was 56 admitted in classes in KG I & KG II. As time elapsed, the sisters built up a very cordial rapport with the local people and thereby learnt the Mizo language. The life style, their culture, customs, folklores, dances, food habits, language.... were filled with intrigue. Pu. Richard Awililiana and his family was very kind to the sisters and attended all their needs. Their support, timely guidance and kind co-operation will always be thankfully acknowledged by us. Sisters were warm and hospitable. Young and old felt comfortable in their benign presence. We fondly remember Sr.Pramila Tigga, Sr.Suchita Ekka who also rendered their selfless service. On 14th April 2008, sisters shifted to the newly condtructed convent adjacent to the to the new school building which was of Assam type with eight classrooms. The people appreciated the selfless services rendered by the sisters. During the course of time Our Superior General Mother Benedicta Lobo and her Councillors, Provincial Superior Sr.Christine Vas and her Council team supported and encouraged us by their constant visit, guidance, and their blessings.

We were privileged and blessed to have a good concrete house which was inaugurated and blessed on 20th January 2011 by Lordship Rt.Rev.Bishop Stephen Rotluanga C.S.C. During tenure of Rev.Sr.Monthi Dias, under her able leadership community and the mission grew. Thanks to Sr.Asha Baxla, Sr.Neelam Xalxo, Sr.Anureena Ekka for their generous contribution towards the growing institution. Then Sr.Precilla Saldanha was appointed as animator of the community from 2012-2017. We are still continuing the task entrusted by the Father handed down by our predecessors. The strength of the school has grown to 350. Christ’s values are inculcated in them through the teaching ministry; poor and vulnerable are given due attention. We are privileged even in taking care of disabled children. Constant visit to the families personally and with the staff, strengthened the bond between parents, children and us. We also involve ourselves in pastoral activities, faith formation of the children & youth taken care through catechism, prayer meetings (SCC, Joint fellowship)....etc

Thanks to all the sisters who were really committed to the Christian Education. May the memories of yesterday renew our zeal for today and point us toward the tomorrow of God. With perseverance and dedication the education apostolate enkindles the lives of the children entrusted in our care who COME TO LEARN and GO TO SERVE....... Relentless endeavours of the committed sisters will remain indelible till eternity.
